First, I thought the lack of government action during the Enron, Tyco, Worldcom and Global Crossing scandals were a slap in our collective face. Then, I thought the public relevation of the Haliburton Iraqi-rebuilding contract with the Pentagon was a huge punch in our collective eye. Now, did somebody just get the license plate number of that bus that ran over us?

Senate Approves Pay Raise for Themselves

The Senate actually voted on Thursday by a vote of 60-34 to give themselves, the House, the Supreme Court Justices and the Vice President a pay raise for "cost-of-living expenses" for the fifth year in a row. And the Senators that did approve the pay raise, such as Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Ted Stevens from Alaska actually said, "This is not a pay raise. This is an increase that's required by law."

That's right. It's a LAW. You know, I don't think anyone reading this works at a job where the have the ability to give themselves a raise.

ME IN A MEETING WITH MYSELF: "Well, me, I've been doing such a good job around here making burgers without me spitting in them and not cursing at customers on the drive-thru speaker when they ask me to take the pickles off. Danny, I deserve a raise!"

They got the raise as part of a package raise for military personnel who rightfully deserve more than just an increase in pay for the work they've done, which just adds more fuel to the troopers for the raging insult fire. To me, the Senators are impling they think they've done just as much as the soldiers in Iraq to help with the war effort to merit giving themselves a raise. Hmmm, let's see:

SOLDIERS: Spent the war sleeping in tents in the middle of a barren desert in a hot summer sun fighting off deadly guerilla troops who could attack them at any moment.
SENATORS: Spent the war sleeping on the floor of the Senate in the middle of a media feeding frenzy in a hot camera spotlight fighting off Bob Woodward and Dan Rather who could attack their character at any moment

But that's not the worse part - it turns out this is the fifth pay raise the House and Senate have given themselves...in a row! In the last five years, their salaries have raised by $21,000! Before politicans used to just raid education funds and hide the cash in Swiss bank accounts, now they just do it right in front of our faces and they have no shame at all. They're no worse than that drunk guy in my dorm who used to run around the halls every Friday night with a bra on his head screaming "I am the fairest of them all!" and not anywhere near as funny.
